There are several local stores we have used before:

   PJ's Sports in Bethesda near Montgomery Mall
   MadLax in Olney
   Sports Extra in downtown Bethesda near the Metro

The following equipment is listed in order of importance:

 Minimum Equipment for U7
   Stick (which can be fiddle stick)
   Gloves
   Good attitude

 Recommended Equipment for U7:
   Athletic Protector (aka CUP) with compression pants
   Helmet and mouthpiece
   Cleats

 Possible additional equipment:
   Arm pads
   Shoulder pads
   Rib pads (some shoulder pads are big enough to cover ribs too)

I expect all of the older players, especially if they want to play in a game, to have the whole list, with ribs pads optional depending on size of child.

The best deal is to get a Starter Kit. It includes shoulder pads, arm pads, and gloves. Here is a page that shows different ones:
